The Ultimate Guide to Wig Sizing for a Perfect Fit

A beautiful wig is a work of art, with intricate details in its design, creation, and placement. This means you can find one that perfectly suits you and helps you shine in a unique way. However, it also means there are many factors to consider when making a purchase. Yummy emphasizes quality in all hair products, ensuring you get the best.

Today, we focus on wig sizing, because no matter how gorgeous a wig is, it must fit you perfectly to be effective. We partnered with Breezy, also known as B.J., an extraordinary wig fitter, who shared a helpful how-to video. We highly recommend watching it if you can’t get a professional fitting.

Below, we provide a summary for quick reference. There are six key measurements to ensure your wig fits like a dream. For accuracy, use a fabric measuring tape and braid your hair into tight cornrows, just as you would under the wig.

Head Circumference: Measure along your natural hairline. Start at the center of your forehead, pull the tape around behind your ears, down to the nape of your neck, and back up to the starting point.

Front to Nape: Place the tape at the same forehead spot as the circumference measurement. Pull it straight back down the center to the nape, ensuring your hair lies flat for precision.

Temple to Temple: Measure from one temple’s hairline to the other, going around the back of your head in a straight line without going over the top or around the bottom.

Length of Nape: This is the easiest measurement. Simply measure the curved hairline at the nape of your neck from one side to the other.

For reference, most people have a nape measurement that is around four inches long.

Ear to ear:

The fifth measurement is particularly important for a frontal wig, so be sure to measure twice. It measures the hairline from one ear to another. To do this, place the end of the measuring tape where the top of one ear connects to the head, stretch it up the hairline, along the forehead, and down to the same point on the other ear.

Here’s a pro-tip:

If you’re going glueless, subtract one inch from this measurement to ensure a perfect fit.

Ear top to ear top:

The sixth and last measurement is from one ear top to the other. This one is super important because everyone’s head is shaped differently. No judgment! Some of us have rounded skulls, while others are more or less flat across the top. This measurement ensures that the wig sits firmly over the top of the head – neither bubbling up in the middle or falling short near the ears.

A final note:

It’s really important to get these measurements right, but don’t be intimidated! They’re all relatively quick to complete, so we recommend measuring twice, or asking a girlfriend for help. Once she sees how amazing your new wig looks, she’ll probably ask you to repay the favor! For more Yummy tutorials, be sure to subscribe to our YouTube feed.
